Relationship between cognitive abilities and conversational outcomes in healthy aging and acquired brain injury

We are interested in understanding how changes in cognitive skills other than language (e.g., attention, memory, executive functioning) can influence everyday language use (also known as discourse) and functional communication outcomes in individuals with aphasia in comparison to neurologically healthy populations.

FOQUSAphasia

Dr. Dutta serves as a co-founder and member of an international working group, Fostering the Quality of Spoken Discourse in Aphasia (FOQUSAphasia), which aims to improve the state of spoken discourse in aphasia. The group comprises researchers and clinicians working involved in discourse work. The goal of this working group is to improve the clinical implementation of discourse analysis and treatment in aphasia and related acquired neurogenic communication disorders.

Cross-linguistic comparisons in connected speech in bilinguals with Alzheimer's Disease

The aim of this research is to: (1) identify connected speech characteristics in Bengali-English bilinguals with Alzheimer's Disease; and (2) determine the impact of disease progression on the different languages spoken by bilinguals and factors influencing these impairment patterns.

Friends Program for Individuals with Acquired Brain Injury

The Friends Program is a partnership between Brain Injury Connections-Northwest (BIC-NW) and the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at Portland State University. The program pairs individuals with different types of acquired brain injuries with student volunteers with the goal of providing opportunities to practice and refine their social skills through establishing friendships and reduce social isolation.
